PIM (Passive Inter-Modulation) refers to RF signals at two or more frequencies in the same passive device, due to the nonlinear characteristics of passive device will produce relative operating frequency and some frequency components, and these frequency components are intermodulation products. If these useless frequency components are mixed with the operating frequency, when the frequency component is large enough, it will affect the normal communication. It is PIM caused by the non-linear characteristics of the passive components. Therefore, in the case of PIM inevitably, it needs to be tested to minimize the interference.

The PIM test of antenna is usually carried out outdoors. Considering the electromagnetic environment in the current space and the repeatability operation of test, the outdoor test results will be erroneous. In order to obtain a more accurate PIM test results, the PIM residual value of the surrounding environment must be low and repeatability. Therefore, it is necessary to build a PIM anechoic chamber.

Performance evaluation method for PIM chamber test area:
As shown in the above figure, the test area is located in the centre of chamber, and the side length is the wavelength of the operating frequency;

The test system links low intermodulation load, and the test result is more than 10dB;

Test system link standard custom -110dBm calibration device, PIM test results in the specification within the range of +3dB;

The antenna under test which has the third-order intermodulation value of about -110dBm to -120dBm is moved along the test area, with the centre position as the reference value, and the test values of the remaining 8 positions have differences less than 3dB respect to the reference value.
